Jane's interest in being a naturalist probably began at a fifth grade science camp and outdoor school run by Exploring New Horizons. Jane's career as a naturalist probably began seven years thereafter, when she became a cabin counselor for the same organization several times during high school. After five years of college, which included biology and environmental studies but which resulted in a computer programming degree, she longed to return to the natural world. So after graduation, she took an internship at a Hidden Villa a farm and wilderness area in Los Altos Hills on the very edge of Silicon Valley. She led farm tours and hikes in the hills. Partway through her college experience, she worked Sunol Regional Wilderness, which is part of the East Bay Regional Parks. It was her only job as a uniformed park ranger to date. After some time working in the computer field, Jane volunteered Muir Woods, helping to set up their computers. That led to a full-time job with the larger Park, where Jane eventually set up over 100 computers (and the first email system in a National Park.)around the Park while traveling from Marin Headlands to Stinson Beach to the Presidio. |
